Here at Vortex we love the challenge of designing and making for an outdoor space from key costumes and props through to an entire set. Infinite possibilities are unleashed when you are working in infinite space!
One of our favourites was the commission to design an outdoor stage set to transform the fountain in Victoria Square, Birmingham for a charged and vibrant folkloric dance celebration as part of the programme of events for the city's International Dance Festival 2010.
In addition our brief was to design a vision that was both interesting and beautiful to look at as an installation in it's own right when not being used as a stage. The focal of the set was celebrating the bronze sculpture by Dhruva Mistry titled 'River' or 'Floozie in the Jacuzzi' as she is more fondly known to Birmingham. We wrapped her in gold transforming her into the iconic mystical goddess for the show but also inspired the public to renew their way of looking at an icon they pass every day, enhancing her presence.
